"Bites from the Appel"

Mold on the berries you just bought yesterday?

I had posted this years ago on an old blog but thought I'd post it again as it's still relevant and I find it works very well! An old ‘home remedy’ for preventing mold from ruining the nice fresh berries you just purchased (I find raspberries and blackberries highly vulnerable – pop them in the fridge and the next morning, low and behold, mold has started to attack them). I thought it would be useful for anyone who hasn’t yet heard about it. Try it on any of your berries.

  1. In a clean bowl, mix a solution of one part vinegar (apple cider vinegar or white vinegar) to ten parts water.

  2. Remove berries from original packaging and recycle

  3. Gently rinse berries in the bowl of vinegar solution.

  4. Rinse the berries in a separate bowl of regular water to remove any last traces of vinegar if desired, but this step is usually not necessary. If you have a high-quality vinegar with a stronger presence, you may be able to taste the vinegar residue, but often times you won’t.

  5. Place the berries in a covered bowl/container and store in the refrigerator.

The vinegar solution will kill off the mold spores clinging to the berries and help to remove any dirt/bacteria adhering to the berries as well. This should dramatically extend the ‘shelf life’ of your berries.

Hope this helps.
